What a week for King Me!

This Friday and Saturday, it's King Me at Cody's Big Sky in Old Town. We all know it's an adventure every time we play Big Sky. So, you'll want to attend.

This Sunday, it's another ALL AGES show at Cody's Big Sky with King Me, Bliss on Tap, and O'Phil. This show promises to be a hot one with a big surprise. Doors open at 6:30. Show starts at 7:00.

Bad News from King Me

It is with a heavy heart that we at Camp King Me must announce that our guitar player of over three years, Dan Weller, will be leaving the band this June.

Dan will be moving to Dallas in response to his wife accepting a job there. Dan has been our very good friend and co-worker since the beginning of the band. Though the best is yet to come for King Me, we know that many of us will miss Dan.

As for King Me, we will be continuing to move forward. We do not anticipate any show cancellations or hesitation in pursuing our goals of band growth and curbing my addiction to Xena Warrior Princess. In terms of performances, just let us say that we've got some surprises up our sleeve and your next King Me show will be better than your last. Well, maybe not your very next one, but soon.

We wish Dan and his wife the very best and hope that you will all do the same.

With that in mind...

Pick up your copy of About Life at the Blockbuster Music stores in Wichita. The CD is also available at Purple Hays CDs (in Wichita), Blockbuster Music in St. Louis, MO, at Streetside Records in Manhattan, KS and soon in Lawrence and Kansas City.

That's all for now. (As if that isn't plenty.)
Drink lots of Budweiser. Wear something sexy.
We'll see you at Cody's Big Sky this weekend.

Really Going Somewhere

Local Band King Me Finally Releases CD

King Me has been asked one question over and over again as the band has played in Wichita.

When is the CD coming out? The long awaited "About Life" has been available for nearly a month, and the band couldn't be happier with the reaction to it. Stalwarts of the Old Town scene, King Me's members are proud to have something to hand to their longtime fans.

"We wanted to accomplish something that was worthy of their support and patience," said lead singer Luke Carter. "My God, after all that time, you have to put out something decent."

In its own way, the CD is also providing a service to King Me's zealous followers.

"It's funny. I've had a couple people tell me they've been singing the lyrics wrong all these years," Carter said. Released on the brand-new Breaker records, "About Life," is bursting at the seams with King Me's crunchy guitar sound and harmonies that show teeth. It's a breathless, relentless showcase of the band's energy, from the sex-drenched "Little Death" to the breeziness of the too-clever "Thindy Brady."

The song that has gotten onto airwaves in Kansas, Arkansas and Alabama is "Love and Pain," which leavens the King Me sound with the timiest touch of funk. Equally interesting is the cynical "Magic Beans," which uses spoken lines and straight-ahead rhythm to pick apart the shadier aspects of the American Dream.

The standout track is the title song, which begins with a grinding siren-slide that anchors the song's fat groove. Dangling above are Carter's lyrics, spiced with internal rhymes and sung with conviction but without bravado.

The most remarkable thing about the album is its outstanding production. Recorded at Wichita's Anybody Listening? Studios and mastered by Stephen Marcussen, an industry standout, the CD's sound far exceeds the sludge that too many up-and-coming bands must endure as they climb.

"What we were trying to accomplish is to have an end product that, in objective terms, was better than anything that had been independently produced by a regional band," Carter said, "and we also wanted a product certainly that would be worth the effort, the money and the energy that we spent on it."

Sales have been strong at both Blockbuster Music locations, where the CD is on sale. It is also available at all King Me shows, including upcoming dates-Dec. 11 and 12 at the Big Sky Saloon, Dec. 4-5 and Dec. 31 at Scotty's.

King Me is made up of Carter, guitarist Dan Weller, bass player Steve Green and drummer Pete Dawson. The four celebrated the new CD with a series of shows at Blockbuster Music, Cabaret Oldtown and the Bohemian Bean Co. For the success of the release parties and their continued growth, Cater said the band is grateful to many people. The staffs at their venues, the volunteers who helped with the events, other local bands and the crowds who show up when they play have all contributed to King Me's success.

"It's been amazing and overwhelming and shocking to see how great people have been," Carter said. "It's sort of humbling." The web site www.kingmenet.com contains more information on the band and upcoming dates.
